Website builder or web designer? How to choose.

If you are just starting out and money is tight, a builder like Wix or Squarespace can be a fine first step. Hire a designer when the website has to bring in customers: when showing up in search, speed, tracking and words that sell matter more than a lower monthly fee.

The honest answer

When each one makes sense.

  • Use a builder if you are testing a new idea, have more time than money, and mostly need a place to send people who already know you.
  • Hire a designer if strangers need to find you on Google, if the site has to turn visitors into calls, or if your current site is costing you work.
  • Already on a builder? Keep it until it holds you back. When it does, a redesign moves your content, keeps your rankings with proper redirects and puts the site in your name.

Before you decide

Five questions to ask any option.

  • Who owns the site, the domain and the hosting account?
  • What will I pay each month after launch, all in?
  • Will each of my main services have its own page?
  • How will I know which calls and forms came from the website?
  • If I leave, what do I get to take with me?

Straight answers

Common questions.

Is WordPress better than Wix or Squarespace?

For a business that wants to grow, usually. WordPress runs a large share of the web, you can host it anywhere and almost anything can be added. Builders are simpler, but you rent the platform and its limits.

Can you take over my existing Wix or Squarespace site?

Yes. A redesign rebuilds it on WordPress in your name, moves your content and maps redirects so you keep the rankings you have. Redesigns are $3,500.

How long does a website take?

Most sites take a few weeks, depending on scope. I’ll give you a real timeline on our call, once I know what we’re building.

Who owns the website you build?

You do. The site, the hosting account and the domain are in your name from day one.
