How long does local SEO take to work?

Usually months, not weeks. A complete Google Business Profile and a clean, fast website can start paying off within a few weeks. Ranking for competitive “service + town” searches usually takes several months of steady work, and longer in crowded markets. Anyone promising page one by a date is guessing.

What moves when

Some of it is fast. Most of it compounds.

What changes the clock

Why one business ranks in six weeks and another takes a year.

  • Competition. A roofer in Fort Worth is up against far more established sites than a dog groomer in Aledo.
  • Where you start. A brand-new domain has no history. A site that has been live for years, even a weak one, has something to build on.
  • How much there is to rank. One page cannot rank for ten services. Each main service usually needs its own page.
  • Reviews compared to the businesses beside you on the map. If they have 200 and you have 6, that gap takes time to close honestly.
  • Consistency. Search rewards steady work. Stopping for three months usually costs more than three months.

Before rankings move

How to tell it is working early.

  • Impressions in Google Search Console. Your pages start showing up for more searches, even before people click.
  • Business Profile views, calls and direction requests. Google shows these in the profile itself.
  • A short list of searches you check every month, from the same town, for where you appear on the map.
  • Calls and forms tracked to where they came from. That is the number that pays the bills.

Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO puts the usual timeline at four months to a year to put changes in place and start seeing benefit. That matches what I see. The Local SEO page shows what I do each month, and the Business Profile checklist is the fastest place to start on your own.

Straight answers

Common questions.

Can you guarantee page one on Google?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Google decides rankings. What I can promise is the work: done properly, tracked properly and reported in plain numbers every month.

Why did my rankings drop after they went up?

Rankings move. Google updates, competitors add pages and reviews, and results change by location. Look at the trend over three months and at calls and forms, not one search on one day.

Is local SEO worth it for a small business?

If your customers search Google for what you do in your town, usually yes, because those searches come from people ready to call. If your work comes almost entirely from referrals, start with your Business Profile and reviews before paying for more.

What does local SEO cost?

My Local SEO plan is $1,250/mo and Competitive SEO is $2,250/mo. Every price is on the pricing page.
