How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers.
There is no switch to flip and no file that gets you in. AI assistants search the web, read a few pages and repeat what trusted sources say. So the work is the same work that wins on Google, done more carefully: let them read your site, answer the exact questions buyers ask, keep your business details identical everywhere, and get other sites to mention you by name.
How it works
Where the answers come from.
| Assistant | Where it looks | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google’s own search index and rankings, plus your Google Business Profile. | Ranking well on Google is still the main way in. Google says no special markup or files are needed. |
| ChatGPT search | Live web searches, the pages it reads, and what other sites say about you. | Your site has to be open to its crawler, and your name has to show up on sites it trusts. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing’s index. | Being properly indexed in Bing matters, not just Google. |
| Perplexity | Its own live search, with sources listed. | Clear pages that answer one question well get quoted. |
What actually helps
Six things, in order.
- Let them in. Make sure your website does not block search crawlers, including the ones AI assistants use. Many security settings block “AI bots” by default.
- Be in Bing as well as Google. Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and set up a Bing Places listing next to your Google Business Profile.
- Answer the real question at the top of the page. “How much does a website cost in Weatherford?” deserves a page with the actual number in the first paragraph, not a sales pitch.
- Same name, phone and description everywhere. If one directory says Inc, another says LLC and a third has an old number, assistants are less sure who you are.
- Get mentioned by name. Chamber listings, local news, partner websites, podcasts and genuine reviews. This is the slowest lever and the one with the best evidence.
- Keep it current. Update prices, dates and examples. Assistants tend to prefer pages that are clearly up to date.
Hype check
What does not work.
- “Rank number one in ChatGPT in 24 hours.” Answers change from person to person and run to run. Nobody controls them.
- A special AI file or secret prompt. Google says it needs no special files. An llms.txt file is harmless, but it is not a ranking switch.
- Fake reviews or posting as fake customers. It breaks platform rules and the law, and it can get a business removed from Google entirely.
- Paying for “best of” lists that pretend to be independent. If a mention is paid, it has to say so.
Check where you stand
A five-minute test you can run today.
- Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google in a private window.
- Ask what a customer would ask: “best [your service] in [your town]” and “how much does [your service] cost in [your town]”.
- Write down who gets mentioned, who gets linked and where the answer came from.
- Run it again next month with the same questions. The trend matters more than any single answer.

Straight answers
Common questions.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. Nobody can. AI answers vary by person, by wording and by day. What I can do is make sure assistants can read your site, find clear answers on it and see your name on other trusted sites, then report what changes each month.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It does no harm, and this site has one, but there is no good evidence it gets you mentioned. Google has said it does not use special AI files. Spend the time on pages that answer real questions.
Will blocking AI bots protect my website?
Blocking the bots that only collect training data is a fair choice. Blocking the search bots means ChatGPT and other assistants cannot read or cite your pages. Check which ones your security settings block.
Is this different from regular SEO?
Mostly it is regular SEO done carefully. The extra work is answering questions plainly near the top of each page, keeping details identical across the web and earning mentions on other sites.
